Stars wow crowd with love songs

PENANG: Contemporary love songs in different languages reigned at the Starwalk Carnival Charity Concert 2006 held at the Penang Interna-tional Sports Arena (Pisa) here last night.

It was a night to remember for many in the crowd as up-and-coming Malaysian stars belted out song after song.

Crowd favourite Andrew Tan melted the hearts of many female fans when he serenaded them with two songs, Because I Love You and Ye Qui.

The 22-year old winner of the Golden Mike award winner at the International New Talent Chinese Singing Championship 2006 was in his element as he performed for the first time in his home state.

Akademi Fantasia 4 champion Mohd Faizal Ramly aka Faizal, 22, also kept the melancholic spirit alive with Dealova and Lihatlah.

Winners of the Astro Talent Quest Championship in 2001 and 2005, Eric Lim and Chan Kwok Fai then delivered heart-warming Chinese love songs.

Project Superstar 2006 winner Johnson Wee, better known as Jon, had the crowd wanting for more when he belted out On The Way and I Will Be Good.

Penang’s Jeep Latino Jazz Band and the Rhythmix Dancers also joined in, keeping the crowd in high spirits with their upbeat numbers and performances.

Project Superstar 2006 first runner-up Desiree’s version of Christina Aguilera’s Come On Over was refreshing, while Yeow Min Tze's rendition of Alicia Keys' If I Ain't Got You was noteworthy.

Local recording artiste and One in a Million 2006 finalist Dayang Nurfaizah stole the show with a Beyonce medley while fellow finalist Faisal rocked the hall with We Will Rock You.

Malaysian Idol 2 runner-up Nita’s vocal prowess was evident through her powerful rendition of a Selena medley and Teman Tapi Mesra.

Three lucky people in the audience won a scooter and two motorcycles donated by Edaran Modenas Sdn Bhd in a lucky quiz.

Housewife Lim Gaik Looi, 38, won a Modenas Xcite 130cc motorcycle while businessman Toh Lim Kang Swee, 46, got himself a Modenas Passion 125cc scooter to take home.

The Modenas Dinamik 120cc motorcycle was won by financial planner Por Joo Tee, 44.

The concert was part of the three-day Starwalk Carnival 2006. The other two events are the sports tournament today and the state’s premier event, Starwalk, tomorrow.

The main sponsors for the concert are Abad Naluri, HSBC, LKT Industrial Bhd and Modenas while Parkroyal Penang is the official hotel.

Proceeds of the concert will go toward the purchase of an ambulance for St John’s Ambulance and dialysis machines.
